Discuss Katie Thompson

Current Discussion:

  • Katie Thompson, is a Country/Pop singer/song writer from a wee town called Hokitika in the South Island of New Zealand.

Katie's latest album titled 'Impossible' was made possible through Sellaband, and Katie is one of the fastest artists to raise $50,000 USD, and was supported by 295 believers who funded the album.

Katie's first album is titled 'Tall Poppy', and features 12 songs on it. Personally after puchasing that album, I was so impressed, I was extremely enthusiastic about the release of Katie's next album 'Impossible'.

'Impossible' was released in 2011 and features 11 songs:

    Impossible
    Always Present
    Good As Gold
    Curious Disgrace
    Roll In Tide
    Keep Your Memory
    Cruel To Be Kind
    Fading Fast
    Wanted You To Call
    The Penny Drops
    Wild Weather

Katie wrote all of the songs, excluding Roll In Tide, Fading Fast, and Wild Weather.

The first time I heard the album 'Impossible', I really enjoyed the song 'Good As Gold', as Katie had released the music video for it previous to the album coming out, so it was good to know one of the songs and be able to sing along to it. ' Good As Gold' is an upbeat 'get up and go' song that I find hard not to tap my feet to. It is a great 'pick me up' song to put you in a good mood, whether you are feeling a bit down, or the gloomy weather is taking its toll outside, its a guaranteed 'feel good' song. If you get the chance to watch the music video, they just looked like they had so much fun with making it, which matches the song's uplifting lyrics.

'Cruel To Be Kind' was the first song that I really liked the first time I listened to the whole album. I liked the lyrics, and Katie has such a soft, crisp, crystal clear and angelic voice. You can understand every word she is singing, and she is a 'natural' on the guitar.

Katie came up with the awesome idea for people all around the world to send in pictures of 'hearts' and put them all together in a very creative video, with a very personal touch from her fans. The 'official' music video of Impossible was a real treat too, with a very simple and natural theme to it.

If I would have to compare Katie to another singer/band, I would have to say that she sounds a bit like 'Killing Heidi' (an Australian Rock Band). Although I really think Katie has her very own sound, which I feel would be admired by both the older and younger generations.

I was not a Country fan at all before hearing Katie's music. The first song I ever heard was called 29 Candles, a tribute song to the 29 miners whose souls were lost in an explosion in 2009 at Pike River Mine. Katie wrote and sang this very emotional, and passionate song, which bought tears to my eyes. It takes a very special kind of person to be able to compose and touch people through music, which Katie seems to be able to do with elegance and flair.

In November 2011, Katie was chosen to perform as the opening act for Sir Elton John here in New Zealand. Katie is a natural on stage and had a radiant stage presence in front of a crowd of 35,000+ people.

So even if you are not a Country fan, please dont let that discourage you from having a listen to Katie Thompson, Im glad I did. She has converted me and I was more of a rock/punk only listener. Katie has a pure gold voice that Im glad she is sharing in her music with the rest of the world.

  • When I first heard Katie's music on Sellaband, I knew this was an artist who was going places, and so did 294 other people from around the world, as we all invested in her current album, "Impossible".

Well, as it turns out, the title of the album was anything BUT...as Katie's "Good As Gold" skyrocketed to the top of the NZ iTunes download charts 2 days after it was released and the continued success of the album, moving up to 3rd in the IndieCharts.com rankings for ALL Genres, and #1 for Country/Acoustic.

Katie's sound is uniquely her own. She brings her Kiwi flavor to Country, Folk, and Pop...combining them in a highly contagious and infectious manner. Her music is solely responsible for making me "cross over" to country music and opening my eyes to other New Zealand musicians.

The second half of 2011 is turning out to be Katie's reward, as she was voted in as the opening act for Sir Elton John in the first Major concert of the newly built Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, NZ; she's a finalist for both the "2011 Country Female Artist of the Year" award and the prestigious "Horizon Award".

If you're looking for something fresh, uplifting, and just downright awesome...download Katie's music. It's all good! It won't be long before New Zealand's newest superstar is known and heard around the world.
